98 TJ Check Engine Light Problems

Had the codes read this weekend-- there were three
1. TPS- malfunction
2. Detected #1 Cyclinder Misfire
3. Speed Sensor on the Tranny -- its a manual transmission

Well I decided to get a bunch of throttle body cleaner, eletrical parts cleaner, and ignition seal and goto town. I took apart every single electrical connection under the hood and cleaned and sealed- I never knew there were so many. Then I took off the throttle body. Unbolted all three sensors and cleaned the heck out of everything bolted everything back up and I still have the problems. I even replaced the distributor cap and rotor and cleaned it all up real nice.... So I'm guessing I need to just replace the TPS? Also where is the speed sensor on the tranny located? I can barely fit my hand around the tranny so how the hell am I going to replace this sensor? My last question is could the cyclinder misfire be from bad sensors? Or what? Re: 98 TJ Check Engine Light Problems

Now thinking alittle more indepth to the day this all started... i remember the exhaust sounded like it had a hole or I broke a seal or something... this would in turn affect the O2 sensor? But after my visual inspection of the exhaust i dont see any holes -- any ideas?

Are your dash guages still working? My guages used to quit working, the airbag warning would come on and the check engine light would come on. It was a loose connection in the dash.

Yea that goes off and on... I just hit the dash and it turns back on... I am getting alittle hesitation though so its not a gauge problem.

Re: 98 TJ Check Engine Light Problems

the weird sounds exhaust sounds like I cracked something in the exhaust pipe when i got done offroading... I got lost in the woods and had to do alittle more in the stock TJ than I really would have liked to... After that I've had a mess of problems. Its not a clogged cat. Elusive think I should take the sensor off the xfer case and clean it? then see?

Re: 98 TJ Check Engine Light Problems

Sounds exactly like the problem I had. I could press the plexiglass near the odometer/tripmeter knob and everything would come back on until I hit the next bump. Finally I pressed really hard (might have been some frustration showing) and it hasn't gone off again in more than a year and 16,000+ miles. I think I've cured mine. Good luck with yours.

Re: 98 TJ Check Engine Light Problems

I dont know if you read my first post... THE PROBLEM has nothing to do with the dash gauges working. There is a check engine light, I have read the codes, and the car is not running right.

Re: 98 TJ Check Engine Light Problems

If the TPS reads bad, than replace it.

I went through water that I probably shoudnt have and I fried the TPS.
From what I know its a realatively sensitive componant. Replace it, see what happens.
My symptoms where erratic idle, misfire on acceleration, and BAD GAS MILEAGE.
easy fix, and i siliconed the heck out of it. now hopefully i wont have problems the next time i cross water that i shouldnt
