help a guy buy his first jeep

I'VE BEEN TALKING TO EVERYBODY I CAN ABOUT WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN MY FIRST JEEP. I WANT DANA 44S BUT I'M NOT SURE HOW TO TELL IF THE JEEPS I'M LOOKING AT HAVE THE 44'S OR THE 35'S (?). ANYBODY HAVE AN EASY WAY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE? AND OTHER ADVICE ON MY FIRST BUY WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THIS WILL START AS A DRIVER FOR MY WIFE WITH WEEKEND OFF ROAD DUTY AND LATER BECOME A SEROIUS TRAIL RIG ONCE IT GETS OLD.

Re: help a guy buy his first jeep

An easy way to tell on a TJ is to look at the fill plug on the cover. A 35 will have a rubber plug, and a 44 will have a threaded in metal plug.

Re: help a guy buy his first jeep

THANKS, THAT HELPS A LOT. I'M LOOKING FOR A TJ WITH A 6 CYLINDER, 5 SPEED AND A 44 REAR. I NEED A/C (I'LL BE TAKING IT TO FLORIDA ON VACATION), FULL DOORS (THEY COME OFF AS EASY AS HALF DOORS, RIGHT?) AND HOPEFULLY A DUAL TOP OPTION (HARD TOPS SHOULD BE GREAT FOR WINTER). I'D LOVE A SOUND BAR AND A CONSOLE. ANY THOUGHTS FROM ANYONE WHO USES A JEEP A LOT?

Re: help a guy buy his first jeep

Dave, Welcome. Please quit YELLING at us...

This page will help you to ID axles axle facts

Don't worry about the sway bar mounts...you will want to disconnect the sway bar when offroading...This does NOT damage the mounts.

be patient looking for your JEEP (its not a car) DO NOT buy a Jeep that is not what you are looking for. YOUR Jeep is out there, you just have to wait for it to find you.

Good luck, and keep coming back here for your answers.
