Lower steering shaft repacement

I am repacing the lower steering shaft on my 1985 CJ7 with a borgeson unit. My question is have i busted something in the stubby spline joint at the fire wall or is it supposed to move in and out freely at the bearing. Is it safe. This is my first post and will apreciate any advice. Let me clarify if i can . The splined shaft that the ujoint on the intermidiate steering attaches to at the fire wall, slides in and out of that housing.SHEW I need a pecile and paper.

Re: Lower steering shaft repacement

My 75 cj has what I call "knuckles" with a u joint inside them at the fire wall that the splined ends of the steering shaft slide into. Then there are two bolts that tighten down and clamp the knuckles onto the shafts.
It is my opinion that they should not slide and if they do they may come apart while driving.
The rear section slides freely through the fire wall.
Not sure if this answeared your question.

Aaron871, your 75 and his 84 are not the same. In 76 the steering was changed again. He's asking about the steering shaft moving in and out of the steering column. I seem to remember mine doing that too the last time I had my steering shaft out. I'm not sure if it is supposed to so I'm interested in finding out too.

Re: Lower steering shaft repacement

there is a plastic keeper thats usually worn out and gone in the cj steering column. I have seen many of them run for years like that, but it isnt right.
I think 4wd hardware etc...sells the parts.
