Re: O/T - Messenger pop-ups!!!

Ahha... I got pissed off with these a while ago and did a ton of research.

Heres what I found.

XP.. and later models of 98 were made with some advanced networking "perks"

One of these included a way for the system administrator to message everyone on the network.
Great idea eh? He can send stuff like. "The network will be shutting down in 5 minuites, please log off and save all work."

Unfortunately, Microshaft didn't think that their current system was good enough (98) and decided that networks should not be different.
SOooo.. they set up your TCP/IP network (internet) connection as just that... another network.

So your computer doesn't diferentiate from the internet to your local networks.

So a bunch of monkeys figured this out, and send mass messages over the messanger service. All they do is shove in a range of IP's and send the message over a network... in this case its the internet.

So..

How to get rid of it..

Follow the bold instructions above for editing services.
It's dead simple, and it works. "messanger" isn't MSN messanger, so that works indipendantly.. all tihs will do is turn of the ability for the "system administrator" to send messages over your "network" (the internet.)

I've done it a million times on all sorts of computers.

Give this software a shot:
Ad Aware

You probably have some sort of spyware/adware on your system.

A router or firewall will stop them too. All you need is a old computer, a network card or two, and a floppy drive even a old 486 will work. Then get Freesco or if your really paranoid get smoothwall they claim smoothwall has yet to be hacked.

But you need a HD for smoothwall but even a old 500mb will work.

Re: O/T - Messenger pop-ups!!!

You can safely disable the messenger service (not MSN Messenger) without any ill effects whatsoever. Talking about MSN Messenger; That must have become the most annoying feature. It starts up when you don't want it and you can't close it down nine out of ten times unless you kill it from the task manager.

My advice is if to remove MSN Messenger altogether. You can remove it from add/remove programs under the "add/remove Windows components" section as long as you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1. If you got a pre Service Pack 1 release, you can still remove it.

Click "Start, Run" and type the following line:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

and click "OK"

Goodbye MSN Messenger.

If you use MSN Messenger, my advice would be to remove MSN Messenger and use Trillian Pro instead. This nice little app can run nearly every type of messenger from within one single program. Off the top of my head it suppports MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM and IRC

Ad Aware is great and does a great job in detecting spyware and adware but will do nothing to stop messages from messenger service unless something is sending your info back to the "mothership" or will it stop any sort of intrusion.

But on the otherhand a router or firewall will stop anything you set it to block and most are set up to block messenger service out of the box.

Both the programs I listed above are also free to use under the GNU Public License.

Re: O/T - Messenger pop-ups!!!

The best thing I've found so far is SpywareBlaster 2.6 www.wilderssecurity.net since I installed it I haven't had a single pop-up of any kind.
