TJ rear bumper questions

I'm in the pocess of building my swing out tire carrier and startrd looking at the stock TJ bumper, I have my concerns... like will it hold the swing out tire carrier and the wieght of the tire and what ever else I mount up there...so

Question #1. Anybody have a swing out tire carrier mounted to their stock TJ bumper?

None the less that bumper does look a little flimsy(sp?) and wouldn't mind having some d-rings to pull from or with in the back so...

Question #2. What size square tubing to use 2x3, 2x4, 3x3, 3x4 for the bumper?

I have seen some right ups for CJ's will that plan work, will I have enough room for the tire carrier (most of the plans I've seen fo CJ's are using eiter 2x3 or 2x4 amd are bolted direct without brackets)not sure if that's wide enough?

Thanx,
John

Re: TJ rear bumper questions

John I used 2x4x3/16 and i think I would break what it is mounted to before I would break it. I have a staub welded on it for a tire carrier but have not goten the materials to make it yet. Guarantee it will hold the weight though.

I would not use the rear bumer, It just seems too flimsy, and it is to big any way for my tastes.

Re: TJ rear bumper questions

I ran my bolts through the tube into the orignal mounting holes.

Re: TJ rear bumper questions

all of the parts on my site are intended to be used with 2x4 rect. bumper tube which is sufficent for a tire carrier hinge to be mounted to.

Re: TJ rear bumper questions

I got my Hinge from Jeepnmatt It was top quality. I would recomend his parts. Only diffrence Is I did not want mine sticking out any further than absolutely necessary.
