Transfer Case **HELP**

It seems my transfer case is bad....Front axle hop and when I shift the transfer case to nuetral neither axle will disengage.

Here are my questions....

1. Are all NP231 transfer cases geared the same? Will any 231 work?

2. How hard is it to rebuild the one I have?

3. Am I missing something, linkage all looks fine...secure, no binding.

Re: Transfer Case **HELP**

Before pulling the jackstands out for the teardown, measure the circumference of all 4 tires. This means take a tape measure and measure around the outside. An 1/8 inch difference between front and back will bind most tcases, and won't allow you to disengage. Even if the tire pressures are the same you can get 4 different tire sizes. I work on a NASCAR stock car and do the tires. I know what the rubber can do. Sometimes, I get a few new grey hairs over an 1/8th of an inch.

Re: Transfer Case **HELP**

I would look at the linkage again. It might look OK, but my first guess would be that it has slipped a little and isn't hitting the hi/neut/lo spots correctly. Get under the rig and see if you can put it into the right ranges with a screwdriver, moving the lever on the TC directly. Might have to disconnect the linkage.

Really sounds like linkage.
