O/T Anyone know how to build a cheap metal break?

I need to put 2 90 degree bends in a 56 inch length of 16 gauge steel. (Building new dash) It might be easier to have a shop do it but I thought there might be a cheap fix involving angle iron or something. Anyone know of any plans out there? I did a search but came up nada.

Re: O/T Anyone know how to build a cheap metal break?

Make a sandwich of a 2X4, a piece of steel angle, 2X2X3/16 would be OK - bigger is better, then your sheet metal, and another 2X4. Clamp it all together with big C-clamps. Then take a short section of 2X4 and a big hammer, and start beating the metal over the angle iron. Work slowly, just a few degrees of bend at a time, moving the C-Clamps frequently to get access. But don't loosen more than one clamp at a time.

With patience and elbow grease you can make a pretty nice bend. You'll make your job easier if you bend over an inch or so, and then trim the excess after finishing the bend.

Thanks for the info... In addition I'll check the price of a machine shop for all the options.

You could even try a HVAC shop.

I use a piece of angle Iron with a 4' pice of tube steel welded on it for the bend part, and a piece of angle iron for the base. sandwich themetal to be bent between vise jaws and the angle, then c clamp the angle with the handle on top, space it enough to hit the bend where you want it then bend. I have bent up to 3/16 like that.

I will get a photo of my small one, it is really simple but you have to leave some room for mistakes and the bend, so it is not a precice as a real break.

Re: O/T Anyone know how to build a cheap metal break?

I have never bent anything that long, but I have successfully bent 30" of 14 ga. using a heavy angle and channel at bending guides.

Good Luck.
