Stock TJ Bumper Strength

Hi, new here and I've got a couple questions.

How strong are the stock bumpers on the TJ's? I don't yet have a winch, and probably won't for a while now, but I was wondering how big of a winch will the stock bumpers hold and at what point will I need to get a more robust anchor for the winch.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Stock TJ Bumper Strength

If you plan to wheel you might want to get more robust bumpers anyway. I know for sure that the plastic ends are good for maybe one good shot.

Re: Stock TJ Bumper Strength

I do not have a winch on my TJ, but I think that most winch plates mount through the bumper to the frame, so bumper strength really isn't much of an issue. I would agree, however, that a better bumper would hold up longer on the trail.

This is on my YJ but the principal is the same...has nothing to do with the will need to get (or make) a mounting plate to hold the fairlead and mount the winch to the frame rails between the grill and the bumper...

And take care to get a good grade 8 bolt to attach that sucker. I saw a guy with a samurai use weak bolts to attatch his winch and it was ugly when it ripped off of the frame. I agree with the other two posts. The stock bumper looks like a large piece of sh!t metal... er sheet metal and is not very strong at all but has little to do with the winch but you have to use a good mounting plate.
