CJ7 weight

Can anybody tell me the approximate weight of my 82' CJ7?
I'm supposedly going to aquire a 2800 lb. WARN winch from a friend of mine ( freebie!! ), fairlead rollers, block and tackle also. My CJ7 has a 258CID, t5 tranny, D300 transfer case, stock axles and a ragtop. Just wanted to know if the WARN would be enough. Thanks.

Re: CJ7 weight

It might be enough to pull yourself on level ground without too much strain, but I've always been told a minimum of double vehicle weight. Your jeep should weigh in the 3,400 range. I'd take the freebie winch, but don't expect it to do more than designed to do. Good luck.

Re: CJ7 weight

I would think that would be too light for your CJ, but it would make a wonderful trailer winch for loading Broken Jeeps onto the trailer. FREE IS GOOD!

Re: CJ7 weight

It seems like mine weighed about 3700 lbs with gear. The rule of thumb for winches seems to be at least 1 1/2 times the weight of your vehicle.

BTW - I had to laugh when I read your post. Every time I hear or see the word "freebie" nowadays, I think of those annoying Monster Garage announcers saying "Freebie"

Re: CJ7 weight

Not an expert but I believe the others were right about the 1 1/2 times thing. But you also have to consider that the weight of the vehicle is only a part of what a winch has to pull. If a 3500 lb Jeep is stuck axle deep or more in mud you have to figure it's going to "weigh" considerably more than 3500lbs. A 2800lb winch is really made more for an ATV or as a trailer winch. But most free things are good. Regards,

Re: CJ7 weight

If you have any non stock parts, or any misc. spare parts on, plan on even more weight. I just weighed mine, 4100#. That is with hardtop and doors, winch, t-19 tranny, and some misc. (not much) tools and parts.

Re: CJ7 weight

I believe most winch manufactures recomend 1 1/2 times the weight of the car. I prefer 2 times myself. I also think if you can find a manual most winches are rated with a minimum wraps on the drum. Therefore if you have an almost full drum your rating will drop to maybe 2200 to 2500 lbs. My CJ-7 is 4500 lbs and I use a 10,000 pound mile marker. A little slow but works good.

Re: CJ7 weight

Mine weighs in at around 3800 lbs. That would be a great trailer winch!
