What to buy a wrangler, suggestions?

i am going to start searching for a wrangler. i am probably going to keep it stock for the first year or so till i can save up the money to get it lifted. i was wondering, what are the good years for the YJ and what should i get engine wise?, i want good gas milage cuz the XJ i have now gets horrable gas milage. what transmission should i look for? i want it to be a stick shift. what other defaults should i be looing out for when i buy this. i want a 91 and up becasue they have the open coolant system. thansk for all of the help. also what do you think would be a fair pri e for one of these things when they are stock?

Re: What to buy a wrangler, suggestions?

in my opinion, id take the '91+ because they are all fuel injected. if you spend alot of time in dust, or mud i'd look into the fuel injection. the 1996/1997 i would stay away from thou because there a transition year. ive heard numerous people say that they are horrible, jeep did some major changes on the wranglers those years, and they came out bad. i personally have a 1995 wrangler, 4 cylinder 5 speed, and i have no complaints about it. i dont mind the 4 cylinder so much, because i dont do heavy offroading or tow heavy things with it. i do normal stuff; drive to work, school, and do light offroading..places ive been with my 4, i wouldnt even dream of taking my friends sport 6 cylinder because you would just dig yourself in. it all depends on what you do too..if you want it for highway driving, id get the automatic 4. there good on gas, and you dont have to keep shifting in traffic..clutch in,shift, coast, clutch out every few feet.
i would also get the hard top, because the soft tops are loud mothers when your doin 70 down the highway.

i hope this helps

I bought my '92 two years ago for $3000. It was a stock with the 4 cyl. It was in great shape though. No dents. No rust. 88,000 miles. It gets about 16-18 MPG, but that's low because of my 31" tires and no regear yet.

If you think your XJ gets bad mileage, you don't want a Wrangler.

I have a 93 4.0 5 speed 4.11 gears 33-12.5 tires and get 16.5 mpg runing 65-75 mph. When I got it in 95 I could get 20 mpg on the road with it stock.
