What mirracle addiditive to stop smoking

Well it seems that only one side of my 304 is smoking. White smoke. What is a good addiditive to combat this? And don't say rebuild the motor, cause that ain't happening. I will be getting a 360 sometime this year. Thanks.

I second the Marvel Mystery Oil solution. I swear by it and have used it in all my vehicles for years....including my old panhead.

I've used restore and it's helped some.

Stay away from that Sea Foam if you have leaking valves or rings (my opinion only), that made my 304 smoke a greenish color and stink something terrible.

Re: What mirracle addiditive to stop smoking

That could depend on why it's smoking.

I just went through that with a guy on the Jeepster BB. Turned out it was a plugged oil drainback hole in the head -I think it was a 360 though.

They get plugged/gummed up sometimes, then when the engine runs, oil puddles at the back of the head because of the slant of the engine. Then that oil puddle runs down the valve guide into the chamber.
Cure's easy, remove that valve cover, run a coathanger or something down the holes. Replace cover, enjoy.

I'd missed that on his and ended up going round and round checking other things - because I thought those heads were the open style with lots of huge passages down. Turns out they are small holes. Your engine may be the same with small holes. He just had something stuck in it.

It's worth a look, costs nothing.

Let us know how it turns out.

Re: What mirracle addiditive to stop smoking

Hey Rich, read your posts over there. Very interesting, I have different symptoms though. I smoke blue right off the bat, definately that oil smoke that lingers. And it smokes the worst when I romp it. It's only the passenger side second and fourth plugs that foul, and they foul BAD! I only smoke out that header. I smoke a little when I first take off and none that is visible when I'm crusing. It really smokes the worst when I goose it w/ the clutch pushed in. Some times it will smoke at a stop light, and sometimes it wont. I need to do a compression test on those cylinders, how else can I diagnose the prob?

Sometimes the gasket rips or wrinkles on the bottom side of the intake manifold but the top's fine. Or sometimes the manifold wasn't cut when the heads were shaved, so you get a slight angular misalingnment.

That's often a hard to diagnose and confirm problem.
But there wasn't, so it isn't.

Forgot to ask about this, I recently had a leaking intake and I changed the intake manifold. I must have not done a good job because it leaked in a different spot. At this point I just smeared RTV on it and it quit. Smoking has been gradually worse since this don't know if its related. Also no smoke when I downshift hard to assist in braking.

Thanks.

Re: What mirracle addiditive to stop smoking

I had the same symptoms once on a amc360, ONE side smoked, I pulled plug wire sone by one, and when I got to the dead cylinder, it made no difference in the idle when I unplugged spark plug wire, so I removed the wire and the smoking stopped.

the downside is the engine didnt make good power with one dead cylinder, yours must be really weak with 2 dead cylinders.

Mine ended up being cracked piston and a good gouge down the cylinder wall.

Re: What mirracle addiditive to stop smoking

It really seems to have good power, I'm sure that the piston is still firing. The plugs actually clean up when I run it on the highway for a while. But after a day on the trail I need to replace those plugs.

Hope I'm not highjacking this thread.

Have you tried Nicorette? I hear it works to stop smoking.
