In my experience the gauge and sending unit are both more reliable than the float on the sending unit. The float fills with gasoline and sinks to the bottom of the tank. I put up a post a few months ago on the problem and fix.
Dang guys, I just hauled a usuable tub and solid CJ frame to the scrap yard, got 20 bucks for them plus some other scrap metal. I tried to give the stuff away around here (MD/NJ) but couldn't find anyone and I had to get rid of the stuff since I was selling my house. Sorry you weren't closer. Good luck.
