WHAT MATERIAL TO USE FOR FRONT BUMPER?

I am trying to decide what to make my front bumper out of. I have some 1.5" steel tubing and my dads, or I was going to buy some 2x4 square tube. What would be better? I figger square would be stronger, but I would have more design possibilties with tube.

That's what I'm using too. I don't care much for the looks of tube bumpers on Jeeps.

1. Strong?
2. What are you trying to accomplish?
3. If you make it too strong...
4. The blows transfered to the frame and
5. You're in big trouble.
6. I agree with Brent
7. I have round tubes, but then,
8. I paid more for shipping than I did for the bumpers!
9. If you want strong...
10. Get two lengths of Triangular tube,
11. And weld them back to back...
12. Triangles are pretty darned strong.
13. Otherwise go with the 2x4 tube,
14. It's strong,
15. And easily worked and welded.

Re: WHAT MATERIAL TO USE FOR FRONT BUMPER?

I used 5x2x3/16 rectangular tubing on mine. It's hella stout!! I used it so I could get a good strong weld around my tow tabs which are 4" tall and 1" thick. Again on the hella stout. But all this was almost free material too. I only had to pay $10 for 20 feet of the tubing.

I too, vote for 2x4 3/16 rectangle tubing. I don't personally like the looks of round tube bumpers. I used the above mentioned on my rear bumper and will use the same for my front when I get time to build it.

nope, no picts, still collecting materials for building. but it's nothing fancy, just straight with the ends cut at a 45 angle.
