8 7/8 \" axle ?

In the stock '74 CJ5 I have the Chilton's book calls the rear axle an 8 7/8 ". I did a search and saw a thread that said this was an AMC 20 HD. So how does this model hold up as compared to a D44 and are there a any upgrades that I may want to consider ?

Re: 8 7/8 \" axle ?

To the best of my knowledge the AMC20 wasnt used until '76. Your '74 should have a D44 under it. to tell the difference the AMC20 will have a round cover where a D44 has a couple of straight edges. hope this helps Wade

If your Jeep is truly a `74 CJ5, It has a Dana 44 under it already.

Yep, the CJ is a stock '74. Slightly modified by the PO as far as taking the cheapest, crudest, half ass repairs. Front and rear bumpers are 6"x3" "I" beams torch cut and fully Oakyized.
