where to leave shifter?

Hey guys- I'm getting confused about the transfer case. I was told if the shifter was in neutral the jeep wouldn't drive, but it sits just as if it were a regular 5 speed, able to be moved around a bit and the jeep drives just fine. anyone got a simple explaination or a diagram b/c something isn't adding up. Lost in L.A.

Re: where to leave shifter?

I leave mine all the way forward, in the 2 hi position. When I put it in the neutral position, I can rev the motor all I want, but it just won't go!

Re: where to leave shifter?

If the Jeep moves then you have the tcase in gear. If the 4WD light isn't on then it's in 2-HI (assuming the light works of course.)

Push it forward from 2-HI (another assumption, Dana 300 on an 80CJ) a bit and you will be in Neutral.
