Engine/Trans Question

Currently I have an 82 CJ5. I am trying to figure out what kind of transmission it has in it. It is all stock with the original GM 151. The unit is a 4 spd. I would go look at it but the Jeep is in Washington and I am in Hawaii. Is there a way to make an educated guess? Thank you for the help.

Re: Engine/Trans Question

Try THIS link. A good info source for what came in CJ-5s to begin with.

From the info supplied my guess would be an SR-4 tranny if it is stock. SR-4s were used behind the 151 and some 258s in 80-81. There is an outside possiblity it is a T-176 which would be kickin.

Re: Engine/Trans Question

The easiest way to tell the difference for me is, the SR-4 / T-4 had shifters with two bends. The T-176 has a straight shifter and were very rare behind the 4 cyl. If you decide to upgrade to more HP of any kind, you can use the SR-4 as a good solid boat anchor
