replace pinion bearings on D44

Noticed I was leaking oil from the pinon seal then found that i can grab the yoke and move the thing all over, up, down, left, right, in, out. It's not the yoke itself that moving but the pinion too. Bearing right??
I'm sure I can replace them myself, but don't I have to set the lash and all that other junk. That I dont know how to do. Am I better off letting a shop do this or could I take a stab at it.

Re: replace pinion bearings on D44

If your pinion bearings are junk, then all the metal from them go threw your carrier bearings, which noramally means the carrier bearings are far behind. Just you do have to reset the lash and pinion preload with new pinion bearings.

Now saying that most of the time, notice most, dana rears will set right back up with the same shims with new bearings. Now remember most of the time.
