YJ high rpm, is tranny swap a good option,aw4

I have a 94 yj with a 4.0 and a 3spd auto trans (904 or 999 I think) with 33"tires with a 231 t/c. I installed 4:56 gears and it is running at about 3200rpm at 65mph. Seems high to me. I was wondering if a 4spd auto like an aw4 is a possible option, or is it electronically controlled by the engine computer. If it is can it be wired around and made to work. Would it be the same spline. Is there a better 4spd auto option one that is not tied to the engine computer. Is there an overdrive section that is short enough that might work better. I only have about 5" that I can move the t/c.

Re: YJ high rpm, is tranny swap a good option,aw4

I have been going over the same thing here... I currently have a 904 in my 87 and 456 gears I have high RPM at 60 mph. I have been talking with a tranny guy here and he told me that I could take a later model tranny from an XJ and use dash mounted switch to control the over drive, or 4th gear. I think I will be looking into this. Anyone here tried this or have any input on it?????????

6. IMHO... keep the TF999,
7. If you go to an overdrive,
8. It's going to cost plenty, and
9. IMHO... that OD isn't as robust as you'd like.
10. If you're still intent on a 4 Spd Auto...
11. Look at a GM TH700-R4
