Let's hear some answers on THIS one.....

Picture this: Locked gas cap. Lost key. Don't wanna spend $65 for a locksmith.

Fill in the blank. I would ______________________.

Thanks!

Drill the lock. It worked for the guys who stole my radio in the Jeep.

First thing I thought of too. But then you have to worry about the shavings getting in the tank. Oh, I got it. Disconnect the fill hose from the tank, then drill the lock. Clean out the hose re-connect and you're good to go.

Take a torch to it

Ok, I DO NOT reccomend that. :P

When that hapend to me, I just destroyed the gas cap with a large pry bar and whatever other tools I could find to do the job...took a long time.

If you have any other keys that will fit the lock try them first before anything else. 'Fiddle' with them a bit and see if you can unlock it. After that I would stick a screwdriver in the lock, drive it (punch) it all the way in and turn. It should unlock. Then I would go buy another cap (and if I was to get another one with the key, I would make a duplicate of that key )

Not bad fellas.......I was expecting more of a ribbing for the extra key.

I too......was thinking of the drilling/shavings in the tank/idea.

Ahhhhhh, yes........the ole "remove the fill hose first" trick.

Damn you guys are good!!

Re: Kinda OT: Here\'s one...locked gas cap and no key!!

My friend lost his wife's gas cap..., went back to the Costco gas station, found a cap on the ground and just put it back on. Turns out is was a locking cap and it wasn't hers. The Costco gas station attendant pulled out a huge wad of keys, and after about trying fifty or so keys..., they found one that worked. Have any Costco's nearby????

Re: Kinda OT: Here\'s one...locked gas cap and no key!!

I would have to say that drilling it out would probobly be the quicker easier way to go about this but Leve does have a good point.. Lock picking can come in extremely handy at times.. Locksmiths do cost WAY too much.. But if you have pins and tumblers both side it gets hard.. I have never been able to get one..
