E-Z Locker only lasted 9K miles?????

buddy put an E-Z-Locker in his TJ. He's had it in about 9K miles... yes mainly street driving, yse we know street drving is not good on lockers... but 9K miles! teeth are worn out and they just sit there and ratchet when he tries to go.

Just wondering if anyone else ever got so little out of their Dietroit E-Z Locker?

I put a Lock-right in my CJ long before we installed his locker, and mine is still holding up... not to mention mine was used when I bought it!!!

Re: E-Z Locker only lasted 9K miles?????

I`ve never heard of one going that quick, but I have heard alot of negative feedback about the E-Z Locker.
It seems they don`t hold up well at all, Which is odd since they are almost the same design as the LockRight.
It sounds like they need to use a higher grade of alloy. The LockRight in my front D-44 has lived through 2
broken previous D-44`s and was in the rig when I bought it and is still working fine.

This may ... (or may not) sound off the wall, but does anyone think that a loose track bar could somehow put added stress on the locker? I don't see how, but we're trying to think about anything that was out of wack for any time that might have messed it up. He had a loose track bar for a couple weeks between the time we installed a track bar relocator and his adjustable track bar. hell, maybe it has a bad heat treatment on that locker......

It would take alot of convincing for me to believe the loose trac bar played a part in the problem. Did you
try a search to see if there`s more info here somewhere. It seems that the problems I`ve heard about
have been fairly recent, And they all sounded like quality issues.

Re: E-Z Locker only lasted 9K miles?????

He talked to Detroit today, seems Detriot has apparently stopped production of the E-Z Locker and are selling off only what stock they have left. Apparently they had problems with them.... that's all they'd say. Unfortunately My buddies about a month over his One year warranty, and they won't work with him. But Randy's R&P is trying to accomodate him as best they can. (that's where he bought his locker and gears in the first place.) They are helping him with the shipping or something on getting the Yukon Super 35 kit... he figures why not go ahead and fix it for good

Re: E-Z Locker only lasted 9K miles?????

Just a thought, but is going with a Super 35 kit really "fixing it for good"? I've never heard a good thing about a Dana 35. I've snapped an axle in a TJ while trying the e-brake trick to relocate some torque. My buddy has blown three sets of spiders up in his Jeep, as well as shearing the carrier in half. My other friend has had a handful of problems with his Super 35 kit in his YJ. Seems the hubs kept coming loose and leaking or something. It just seems like a TOTAL waste of money. You could probably swap a D44 or 8.8 in it's place for less than the kit costs. Just my thoughts though.

Yeah I would say to try and replace the D35 with somthing stronger. I do nothing but worry about my 35 every time I go 4wheeling. It causes me to take it easy sometimes when I don't want to. I can't wait to get my D44 with ARB in my Jeep.

Re: E-Z Locker only lasted 9K miles?????

Well, you have to figure, what type wheeling we have around here, the fact that he runs 33's and doesn't plan on going any larger.... Yes we all know the D35 wasn't the greatest axle ever made.... but that doesn't mean that it can't be wheeled AT ALL!!

Re: E-Z Locker only lasted 9K miles?????

Isn't there something in the warranty about tires not to be over 31's? You say your friends got 33's. I was looking into putting one in my `62 but, the guy a 4WP told me about the tire clause. So, I'm saving to go ARB or Ox.

I was wrong, here's what I stated before on the subject, Amc 20(detroit locker) and Dana 30(EZ locker) ???

Re: E-Z Locker only lasted 9K miles?????

ya, that might be contributing factor... but I'm kinda figuring (and I may be way off basis here) that 31" bias-ply weight more than a radial so these companies just say any tire 31"....

As of the latest he's going dietroit locker and alloys axles from Randy's. they guy he talked to at Randy's said that's the set-up he's running with his TJ sitting on 35" swampers and hasn't had any problems. Actually the same guy said he had the same problem as my buddy did withthe E-Z-locker. So he went detroit and alloy's.
