CJ5 or M38A1?

I just bought this thing, but i can't figure out if it's a CJ5 or a M38A1. It has a snorkle hole in the hood like a M38A1, but headlights like a CJ5. Has a lot of things like that. I can email pics to anyone if they want. Write me at [email protected] Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

First off, welcome to the best BBS around. Secondly you can actually post your picture into this thread so we can all see it. To do so go to the main index of the forum and scroll way down to the Test Stuff Here forum. Then upload the pictures to your posts and attach them. Its not hard, but check your email, there will be somethin from me.

Re: CJ5 or M38A1?

One way I usually tell the two apart (aside from the snorkle hole you mention) is that M38A1's had standard shackle reversals. Of course if the Jeep in question is heavily modified otherwise, this is hard to tell.

Welcome aboard, SwampFox12. I sent you an email about the differences. I asked about the same questions when I got my `62. L8r,

Easiest way to tell is the M38A1 has a big round indention on the passenger side of the tub under the cowl and between the door opening and fender. It will also have a battery box between the windshield frame and hood in the top of the cowl.

Re: CJ5 or M38A1?

It is actually pretty hard to tell by the photo. There is no split in teh sindshield. you can see that the line is from the backwall. The rear view mirror is in front of the "split"

Are the turn signals bullet type that attach a bit inside of the grill? The hood for early CJ5s have the cutout for a snorkel. And the cowl looks like it has a cover on it. If it is removable then it probably is a m38A1, if not it is is a 5 (mine has the box cover)

Best way to tell is for the BIG HOLE in the passenger sid.e That is the true giveaway
