CJ - 258/t18 clutch linkage problem please help

I just reinstalled my tranny after putting granny gears in it. I replaced the clutch under wattany too just because I had the tranny out anyways. now that it's reinstalled when i back the clutch ajustment off it's a lose pedal, when I tighten it up it goes half way and then it's soild anywhere's between that doesn't do anything. the clutch just wont work. I'm sopposed to have a run tomorrow but if I can't get it tonight that ideas gone. oh ya and I checked the clutch fork and it's moving properly.

Did you change bellhousings or have to drill your bellhousing to fit the t-18. When I installed the t-18 on my 304 the bolt on the driver side bottom of the tranny to bellhousing phase interfered w/ the clutch fork. Check that before you cut the linkage like I did, to find that it wasn't the problem after all. Let us know how it goes.

The same happened to me a couple of months ago when replacing my clutch. Later I found the throwout brg. came off of the fork, causing a bad clutch engagement.

1. can you put the pressure plate in backwards? i think it only goes one way. Now the clutch plate maybe a different story, but I can't see it. It's usually the same ethier way, But you're right it's something to check.
2. I made sure when drilling the new holes in the belhousing, not to get the bolt in the way so that's fine it's diffenatly out of the way.
3. everything on the clutch fork seems fine and the bearing is on there. Everything in that area it ok i think. Man I hope I don't have to pull that out again!!

Yes, the clutch plate must go in in the correct direction. At least in a 304 to t-18.

I know how you feel, I've had my trans/transfer out and in so many times I can do it in my sleep. To make it easier, install studs into your block w/ locktite and use nuts to fasten the bellhousing. It's so much easier to line up. A friend told me to do that and it took me maybe six or seven times of thinking that this is the last time before I wised up and did it. Huskyjeep, this is not the last time, install the studs. Good luck!

Are you sure it is the linkage not the pedel bearings gone bad. Mine went in traffic pedel went to the floor and stayed there.
Clutch plate is suppose to go on with a marked side towards the engine ...at least mine did.
ON the T18 the bolt inside the bellhousing will interfer with the throw out arm unless it is modified.

Of course I meant the clutch disk - not the pressure plate. Brain fart.
