New CJ\'s speedometer noises? Help!

Well, I started hearing this whining noise yesterday when I was going about 40mph. The weather was about 45 degrees. The noise was coming from either the tcase or the speedometer. I slowed down and the noise stopped. I sped up to 40 and heard it again. I looked at the speedometer and the thing was jumping from 25 -75 mph. Then, I put the tranny in neutral and goning 40 I still heard it. After about 6 miles it stabilized at the correct speed, and the noise went away. Today it was 60 degrees when I started it up today and no noise. Tonight the temp is about 45 and it did the same thing. Is there any grease in these that need to be touched up on? I know this is a `62 and the (I think) original speedometer might be getting tired? Any thoughts on this?

I'd guess it's the cable not the speedo. Take it loose from the speedo, the high end, and run some powdered graphite into it.

I third the motion. Pull the core out of the sheave (if it will) and hose it down with graphite/graphite contents lubricant. Mine does it below about 38 and over 55-60mph.

Well, your right again, TAZ. I took the cable out of the tubing and poured about a half of tube of powered graphite down there and the had a session of getting it back into the tcase gear. But I took her for a spin and the high pitch whine I thought was road noise went away. So I guess that it will quiet it down when cold. TAZ I tried bumping your rating to 4 stars, but I don't think it worked. Thanks again,
