antifreez coming out the back of valve cover on258

the most rear bolt on the valve cover of my 85 cj7 was missing. and i have had what seems to be antifreez leaking out of the hole that the bolt is supose to be in.

does that hole go in to a wather jacket or something or is there another place it could be leaking. its not the head gasket. cause the leak starts right at the bolt hole.

could the head have a crack inside under the valve cover and just be leaking out the back because of the missing bolt.

any know problems like this out there? thanks

Your intake manifold does have coolant running thru it stock, so a crack is possible. Did you witness an active leak or was it just pooled in the bolt hole. Check the heater hose that routes from the heater core to the rear of the manifold.

Re: antifreez coming out the back of valve cover on258

at first i thought it was the freeze plug on the back of the head. but after cleaning it and getting a mirrior out to see where it was comming from. it was commng out of that little bolt hole. i would wipe it clean and then see it start to come out of the hole. i check the heater hoses and everything ealse around there.

today i took the vlave cover off. and the indse of the cover was coverd in light brown mushy gunk. is this what oil looks like when its mixed with antifreez?

i did an oil changed to see if there was the same gunk or any antifreeze in the oil pan part and it was clean perfect oil.

has anyone heard of such a thing?
thanks

Yep, that's what it looks like. I think I'd start pulling the head and looking for cracks or a bad head gasket. I'd think it could go either way.

Re: antifreez coming out the back of valve cover on258

i was hoping it wasn't the head gasket. if it was a head gasked wouldn't i have smoke comming out of my tail pipe?

and if its a head gasket it is possible for it to get up inside the valve cover? if it is it most likely just pooled up at the back and snuck out the back of the valve cover.

anyone else have any ideas of how antifreeze could get inside the valve cover??
thanks

bump if any one knows how antifreeze can get inside the valve cover or if anyone knows if the rear bolt for the valve cover screws in to a water jacker?

thanks

Here's a thought, Maybe the PO broke off the valve cover bolt and had to drill it out and hit the water jacket in the process.
