special tool for ball joint?

do you need a special tool to take apart the upper ball joint? (that threaded nut that sits underneath the 1 1/4 nut, down inside the housing) i tried to use a screwdriver and a hammer to 'tap' it out, but no joy. any other suggestions?

thanks all

Re: special tool for ball joint?

1. No, you don't need a ball-joint press.
2. But it makes the job a whole lot easier.
3. I'd recommend one..
4. They're not to expensive for their usefulness.
5. I paid $39 for mine... and would't leave home without it.
6. In the 9 month's I've had it it's paid for itself 4 times over.

I had the local machine shop make me an adaptor so I could use the same press for U joints. Cheep way to get both.

Re: special tool for ball joint?

I think he is talking about the threaded "split ring ball seat" inside the top ball joint. You need a spanner wrench to remove it. Also a lot of WD40 or heat.

Re: special tool for ball joint?

Yes, There is a special tool. Its a four prong socket that looks like a small hub socket. It probably won`t
help to get it apart though. It`s meant to torque that upper ball joint sleeve when you install the new
ball joint.

Re: special tool for ball joint?

That sleeve is split and can easily be peeled inwards with a chisel, after soaking it with penetrating oil. Be carefully not to damage the threadds on the knuckle.

A new ball joint will come with a new threaded sleeve.

You should use a proper or modified socket to properly torque the sleeve on re-assembly. You can easily modify a socket with a disk grinder to give it the four prongs needed to torque the sleeve on reassembly. I couldn't find the proper socket locally, so I used a metric deep socket I never use.

Re: special tool for ball joint?

Just did one this weekend. Used a hand grinder on a 3/4" deep socket to make the necessary tool. I think Napa also sells the right spanner for the job.

I couldn't find the spanner wrench, so I made one too out of a socket. It's important to have one when it's time to put a torque wrench on during assembly.

Re: special tool for ball joint?

4WD Hardware calls them a ball joint spanner wrench and they want $20.95 for them.
Parts Mike sells them also, He calls it a ball joint adjusting tool. His price, $9.99.
