Tranny swap

My '74 CJ-5's T15A is sick and I need to do a full rebuild or swap it out. I don't have too much trouble getting around the ranch with the taller gearing, but I was given a good shape T176 and BH and I'm thinking of swapping it in. I know it's not as stout as the T15A, but the lower gearing is attractive on my hilly land. Trouble is it looks like I need an adaptor to hook up with the stock Dana 20. Not a big deal, but I want to know if I might expect more trouble during the swap.

Re: Tranny swap

Driveshaft lengths due to the tranny's being different lengths. I don't know how long the T-176 and the T-15 are, but if they are different you may need driveshaft work done. Also the skid plate mounting holes.

But if you have the bellhousing to go from your engine to a T-176, then you'll need a T-176 to D20 adapter, most adapters runnning between $300-$500. for the cost of teh adapter alone, I'd be rebuilding the T-15 instead and then selling off the the T-176 and bellhousing. then you have a rebuilt tranny from the parts you sold.

Re: Tranny swap

Another way to go would be to find a used D300 xcase that would bolt to the T-176. You'd get the added benefit of the 2.62 low range. They usu sell around here for $150-200, still cheaper than a rebuild. Good luck.

Re: Tranny swap

Another idea for a trans swap is a T18 from a Waggy or J-series truck. They were mated to the D20 tcase. These give you a crawl gear put 3 more to drive with. YEE HHHAAAWWWW!!!!

Re: Tranny swap

I'm with BigUgly on this. The T-18 & Dana 20 out of a J-series truck make a damn nice swap into a CJ-5, but you have to convert the front input shaft. I went to partsmike.net and paid 200 bones for the kit and love it! Oh, I also had to have the drive shafts adjusted to the tune of another $125. But it was worth it.
