4WDHW Currie bolt in 44 for CJ can you upgrade...

I have been trying to locate a waggy 44 w/ pass side diff to have shortened to fit my widetrack CJ. No luck finding anything at the local yards for a good price, and not finding anyone else on various BBS on the net.

So now I am thinking about the "bolt in" 44 from currie in 4WD Hardware since I am in a hurry to have the jeep ready this spring. Question is, can you upgrade the outer parts later since it uses the 30 brakes etc...

Reasons I want to do this:

1. I want to run front and rear ARBs this spring
2. not going to put ARB in the 30
3. going to put in the 44 SUA (3" lift springs)
4. I have new brakes and heavy duty tie rod on the 30 which can be used with the currie 44 (right?)

So later, I can upgrade the outers, brakes, etc... (when I have more time & money)
Does this make any sense?

I belive the axle does not come with knuckles, so you can use the 30 outers, but when you go to upgrade you might want to think about new knuckles (flat top) but as far as the rest of the parts the only differences between the 30 and 44 outers really would be the axle size. The big question I would have is can you use the 30 spindle on the 44 shafts or have the shafts been machined to fit the 30 outers on it.

A friend of mine has a 76 Cherokee front D44 with pass drop. I believe it has 3.54 gears and is complete. His user name is Lumpy85. We are located in Missouri not sure if you want to ship it or not. Email him at [email protected]

from what i gathered the outer d30 knuckles are use and a new outer shaft is made to fit the d30 ... but you can swap on d44 knuckles and shafts.

I shortened a waggy 44 at work to fit under my CJ. If i was to do it again. I would just buy the empty housing from currie and add all of my own outers and such. I would just get the outers from a chevy, ford, dodge, and go with it.

Edit

opps i forgot to say also get the inner axles from currie also.
You probably can deal direct with currie if you want too. That way you can talk to them. We are a dealer for them at work and they know there stuff.

OK, so sorry if I am a dumbass...

But the way I understand this is that 30 and 44 outer knuckles are interchangable? for instance, you can mount 44 knuckles on a model 30 housing?

Thanks for edjucating me.

I would then need later on to upgrade,
44 knuckles
outer axle stub shafts
spindles, brakes, hubs, etc...

Is this right?

the knuckles are interchangeable but the guts of them are diffrent and the ujoin on a standard d30 and a standard d44 are diffrent (the currie unit has the d44 ujoint and the correct outer shaft to match the ujoin and fit the d30)

so yes you can upgrade latter
