What makes the Grand CHerokee Dana 44 weak?

everyone says that the grand cherokee dana 44 is weak, but so far i haven't seen any stated reasons why, they make a lock rite for it, so a locker is avaiible, it stil has the 30 spline shafts, but he center section is aluminum, is it weak because the tubes bend, can't u truss the axle, anyone have any actualy reports of seeing one break, and since the newer grand cherokees have coil springs in the back do they bolt on to a TJ or are they mad different thanks guys, i can get one realyl cheap but if it realyl is crap then i won't

I believe you somewhat answered your own question. From what I hear, it's because of the aluminum housing. I don't believe it can take hard shots from rocks very well, as it's such soft metal. I'm not sure if the case flexes aswell being as it's probably not as ridgid.

aluminum has a higher modulus of elasticity so it breaks instead of bending. it's actually stronger, but it is used in thiner ammounts to reduce weight. this is why it is so durable.

go ahead and price gears for that axle.. I hear they dont use standard d-44 gears and they cost about $500 with limited ratios available.
the 8.8 is a far better idea

Re: What makes the Grand CHerokee Dana 44 weak?

I have one sitting around with 3.73's in it, no caliper brackets or brake stuff, needs a couple wheel mounting studs. I'd take $150 for the thing if some one wants to take if off my hands. I believe the gear options, aluminum center section, and lack of avilable lockers is why people don't always use them. Drive train direct sells gears for them reasonably according to their add in november a package deal for an aluminum 44 4.10's or 4.56's and gears for the d30 with install kits it's $479 so cheep gears do exist for them now. I'm just not sure on the lockers but their's always the welder though i'm not sure how much the aluminum carrier would like that, i think it's aluminum.

what elusive said.. double it... bang that center section on some rocks.. and you'll know first hand... plus limited gearing... and locers..
does it go in.. yes.. it does.. youll need to relocate the track bar.. and im not sure about the spring buckets... a friend of mine is this crappy axle in his tj.. and no.. i had nothing to do with it being there....
