Need camper/jeep hauler ideas...

I need some ideas for the best way to haul the jeep and to be able to keep jeepchick happy on those hot summer nights "camping" with some AC. I'm leaning towards a used cab over slide in camper and a trailer for the jeep. I sure don't have 40K for one of those fancy "toy hauler'' type campers. We have a Dodge Cummins HO diesel with a six speed so hauling the load won't be a problem. Truck camper on a gooseneck? That might be nice. I have even thought about building my own camper/hauler. Lets hear your fantasy jeephauler/camper! Any pics would be cool too!

What about a old school bus. A friend did this to take his car and family to the race track.

Re: Need camper/jeep hauler ideas...

I think getting a used cab over camper and a 16 ft trailer would be the cheapest. Locally, used campers sell for less than $500.00 all the time. (older ones) I actually just got one for free (One of my dads friends gave it to me) It is a 8ft, has a 3 way fridge, stove, heater.
The reason he was getting rid of it was he got a new dodge and it wouldn't fit. The dodge bed narrows on the back, so you might have a hard time finding a used one that will fit your truck. Either way, campers don't seem to be as popular as they used to and their resell value seems low. Also, used 16 ft trailers (what I use) seem to be quite common.
I drool over those toy haulers all the time. I have been thinking of building one also.

Re: Need camper/jeep hauler ideas...

Although I wasn't wild about the looks of it, I used to go past a house had a unique camper/car hauler setup in the driveway. He'd started with an old school bus and shortened the body but left the frame full length. Behind the body, he'd added a low flat bed for the car. Pretty cool idea, but it still had those ugly school bus windows and doors.

Now if you started with something like this, think how happy the kids would be riding in that compartment up top. I suppose if you put enough money into a lift, you could just put the Jeep up top too. Well, you DID say fantasy!

Bet you don't have any trouble tripping the traffic light sensors with that!

Re: Need camper/jeep hauler ideas...

I've actually seen a number of these school bus conversions. They seem to be pretty popular for tractor pullers. as for the dumb school bus windows. i've seen a few were they actually paneled the sides and added real camper windows ended up being a real good looking hauler.

e-mail mud racer he has a slide in camper on a goose neck trailer and might have some pics of it. Looked like a pretty cool set up and then for day trips you can take the camper off and haul 2 rigs and get your gas paid for.

Re: Need camper/jeep hauler ideas...

Rich (InfantryYJ) has the nicest setup I've seen. A Coachman travel trailer with the fold down rear hatch to take a vehicle. The only drawback I can see is the the limited space (he has to remove the spare and carrier) and there's a ceiling limit. Probably NOT the ticket for full width axles & 44"s though.

Re: Need camper/jeep hauler ideas...

Do what I did, Sell the camp trailer and purchase a motor home, preferably a diesel pusher. You then can put a trailer behind it for the jeep and be all set. I currently just flat tow the jeep, although I have never gone more than 250 miles.
