HELP!!! 86 CJ Trouble staying started

I have an 86 cj that I can't seen to keep running. When I drive it it sounds like popcorn poppin. It backfires and sometimes out of the carb. I can leave it sitting at warmed idle and it will run fine sitting there and then all of a sudden it will start to idle down and then just shout off. The more I drive it the worse it gets. I've adjusted the timming to specs, new dist., new coil, new brain box, new ignition coil, new oil,new plugs, new wires, and new rebuilt carb. Can any body offer any suggestions?????? I've even pulled on all the wires, thinking it was electrical. Could it be my valves sticking that could be creating all this? I took the emmisions off by the way. Any help would be a GREAT help. Thanks

I not sure about the straight 6 but, it sounds like what happened to me on a Chevy V8. Check your plug wires at the cap. If you have 2 switched it will idle fine until you give it gas and then the popcorn starts. L8r,

I would put the emissions equipment back on and see if that helps. By the way, Welcome to the forum.

you said you set the timing, does the timing seem to be holding, or have you rechecked it to see if it has fallen out of timing?

Re: HELP!!! 86 CJ Trouble staying started

Yeh, the straight 6 will do it too. Mine did much the same symptoms after I first messed with the plugs. When I first bought it I did a quick tune up and apparently wasn't paying close enough attention to the firing order. I know, it's only six plugs and they're in a straight line but I was in a rush and thought I could do it with my eyes closed. I had #5 and 6 reversed and it would start and idle fine, but backfire like crazy when driven.

Take a step back and recheck the plug wires to make sure they are in the correct order.

Also, if you set the timing, take a second to make sure you tightened the dist. bolt back down.

I "seen" that be the issue before, not that it's happened to me

Re: HELP!!! 86 CJ Trouble staying started

Thanks for the advise, I unfirtunatly talked with chris at wilsons 4X4 and he said that if I wanted tyo take off the emi that I should switch to a 83 carb for my 86, so it doesn't have the harnes in the back for the emi. But thanks for the advise. I might have to end up buying a 86 carb
