Changing gear ratio in my Dana 30 front axle.

Hi !
I wonder if anyone can help me find out if there are different sizes on a Dana 30 (CJ7 widetrack)"diff" house.
I am about to change my stock 3.31 gear ratio to 4.27 and i have been told that the housing could not fit the new gears.
Is this right or will the new gear fit right in there ?

In case that link doesn't answer your question. I went from 3:31 (stock) to 4:88's. I did need to buy a new carrier (I think it was $50.00), but that was the only change. It seems the line for needing a new carrier is at 3.73.

The housing is OK, it is the carrier you will need to change. they are pretty easy to get, they are usually on e-bay. The carrier break is when you go from 3.54 and lower to 3.73 and higher.

Can this be explained any differently? Sorry I'm not getting it...
I had my rears on my 20 changed from 3.54 to 4.10

I just bought the front 4.10 R&P & master install kit

are you saying I need a carrier also, I thought with 3.54's I didn't need one??
thanx

(ps - soon to be leaving the garage woo hoo)

Re: Changing gear ratio in my Dana 30 front axle.

If you are running 3.54:1 or higher (numerically lower) it takes one carrier. If you run 3.73:1 or lower (numerically higher 4.10, 4.27, etc.) you need larger carrier. The bolt holes for the ring gear will not line up if you do not have the correct carrier. It looks as if your swap 3.54 to 4.10 will require a new carrier. Check out ebay they always have em. Search this item on ebay Item 2403876617 .
