I\'m dangerous now! Just got my new welder!

The CJ is a-fearin' now!

Just got a great deal on a Lincoln 135T and an auto darkening face guard, out the door for $500. $25 cheaper than the Hobart combo I was going to get on the internet and I was able to get it local.

Time to fix those cracks and box that frame. Well, after a lot of practice. Any advice for a novice welder? Other than to practice a lot.

Sweet, congrats and have fun. Get gas if you don't have it. Find a metal place; we have one here locally that has a large scrap area; everything back there is sold by the pound, great for picking up stock and miscellaneous practice pieces. I've been welding with an old A/C arc for awhile; am right this moment anticipating the arrival of my new Millermatic 175, two more days and it'll be on my doorstep

Find a continuing education course on basic welding. Good luck. Just welding a crack doesn't always last long if the metals not normalized after the weld.

Re: I\'m dangerous now! Just got my new welder!

Practice makes perfect. I've been board in auto class so i've been doing a ton of practice welding lately and have finally been able to lay down some good beads, start easy and work up from there i've been laying down some killer but welds and lap welds but my t welds need work. We have a 110v miller and it's a nice machine for basic stuff we do in class. Find some one that knows what they are doing to help you out it's a whole lot easier to watch some one and have them give pointers than it is to learn out of a book. Plan on spending a lot of time working on your welds before you actually weld anything structural or crutial to your safety.

Ya, it'll be a long time before I weld anything that my life will depend on. The cage and frame tie ins are being done by a pro.

Some day though.

Mostly I just want to be able to fab up my own stuff, with a '74 you really need to be able to make what you want.

Congrads. Out the door for $500 is a good deal. I think welding is just one of those things... The only way to get good, is to do it a lot. Get gas, it will help cut down splater.

Get gas! Try a bottle of CO2. It'll spatter a bit but, it's CHEAP and you get good weld penetration.

Re: I\'m dangerous now! Just got my new welder!

i found a great way to practice when i first got mine was to build a few simple things...my first project was a rolling cart for my welder and gas bottle, soon after that i made a receiver rack, then an axle stand, then an over the tire cooler rack, and on an on.......but seriously, that first project really helped me get used to my welder.

get some angle iron and some expanded steel, you can make damn near anything with just that.
