SOA handling manners
 
I'm planning on buying a set of Dana 44's for my 87 YJ. They are coming out of a YJ already set up for SOA. I've always wanted to go SOA but a friend started telling me that its not overly recommended for much road use, and also pretty bad for handling side hills. I will be on-road enough but always short little 10km trips to work, any major road driving would be around an hour or two to trails at most. Also how is soa on side hills? is it something that can be bad? and extra thing to keep in mind? or is it not so bad?

Any opinions appreciated! thanks!!!

Uhhh, what springs are you going to use? Your stock YJ's? I think you will find that they will be very soft. That is the benefit of that particular suspension, soft and flexy, enabling you to keep the tires on the ground. Unfortunately, soft and flexy is not a good thing when you're rolling down the highway at 65-70 mph. It's a tradeoff. I started with stock waggy packs and had too much body roll on the street; it was especially bad when cornering. I could outflex TJ's with multi thousand dollar longarm kits though. I now have added two leaves into the rear packs (a main and a third) and one leaf into the front packs (a main) to stiffen it up a little and it is tolerable on the street. Good thing she starts shaking pretty good at 60, though, I don't think that I would want to go much faster with such a soft suspension. Swaybars would help; I don't run one at all so couldn't tell you how much it would help.

i've run SOA with 35's using stock springs for a few years now, and if you keep the swaybar up front....handling won't me a major issue...i also recommend using an extra main leaf in front and rear spring packs. I'm presently running 44s with SOA and 2" BDS springs minus the swaybar and tracbars, and its a bit looser but not scary, i drove it from NC to MD on the interstate and never had an issue.

i say give it a go

I would think that a good pair of stiff shocks would also help in a SOA situation. On the street they will hold the body up, (more than soft shocks) But on the trail they shouldn't hinder flex too much.

get some adjustable shocks (ranchos) thats what i run and i think it rides better that it did SUA. there is a little more roll but nothing to write home about.
