CJ 1985 T5/D300 into \'74 CJ5 with T15/D20 Question

I have an opportunity to get a T-5 mated to a D300 out of a 1985 CJ for $100. I'd dearly love to have a 5 speed instead of my current 3 speed behind my 304. In addition, the lower low range would be nice as well. However, is the tranny tough enough? I figure the D300 is fine, but I'm not sure about the tranny. Also, is it a bolt up, or am I going to be hunting up an adapter or different bellhousing or shaft? Will I need to do much work on mounts for the different tranny and t-case? Anyone done a T5/D300 for T15/D20 in a CJ5 swap? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

if you can get the bellhousing from the t5.. it would damn near bolt up.. probably just drill some new holes in the skid plate.. they use the same mounting hardware...
for sizes... check here.. http://www.jeepgod.net/transizes.html
not sure what i have on there.. but it might be of help..

Re: CJ 1985 T5/D300 into \'74 CJ5 with T15/D20 Ques

Thanks for the link! Gonna have to crawl under my jeep and double check my measurments, but looks doable. Also found out that they've got the same input shaft size and spline count. The output is different, but since the 300 is already married to it, that's not a problem. I like the idea of a lower first gear, a lower low range and a overdrive!

Any idea if the T5 is tough enough to put up with a 304 with 3.73 finals and 33s?

Re: CJ 1985 T5/D300 into \'74 CJ5 with T15/D20 Question

the t5 is a pretty weak tranny. if you take it easy(not usually in my vocabulary, but i read about it somewhere) it might last a while, but with any serious wheelin it won't be around too long. the price sounds great though, and after the t5 passes away, you still have a 300 to put behind a real tranny, and for only 100 bucks. not bad

Yea, I dont think the T-5 will last very long either. But if/when it does go, it is a DIRECT BOLT ON swap for the stronger T-176/177 4-speed swap.

Hey, thanks for that info! .....looks like the T-177 would be the best of the bunch since they have a slightly lower first gear. Thanks again!

Yea, I have a T-176 behind a 360, It only sees off-road. had it in there 3 years, no problems. bolted right in to the stock 3-speed bellhousing, and I used the Dana 300 T/C that the 176 was originally mated to. Just needed to shorten the drivehsaft, but went with a C.V. shaft anyway.

Re: CJ 1985 T5/D300 into \'74 CJ5 with T15/D20 Ques

I put a 360 in front of my T5 and it lasted only about six months and only two days of wheeling to make it come apart. The rest of the time was just some two mile trips to town and back. Im running 33 inch Thornbirds. I put a locker in the rear axle the weekend before it happend so it could of been just about anything that caused it to blow. Im pretty sure it was my heavy foot though. I now have a SM465 in its place, and My 360 came out of my rusted up CJ5 with the three speed and D20 combo and I actualy tried to shell that tranny so I could give the wife an excuse for another tranny But it never happened
