Score! Got some welding cable.....

Hey all,

I've been looking to find OO cable. SO that I can run it from my battery in my tow vehicle to the rear bumper and use a battery disconnect at the rear. That way I can power up a few things. Including a winch on a boat trailer, Jumper cables, and a winch on my car trailer. However, OO cable isn't cheap.

I've been going to a welding class for a few weeks now, one of my instructors has 90ft of welding cable on a spool at this shop.. He's gonna give me what I need to run setup.. Yahoo! Its normally over $2 a foot!

Glad I kept my eyes open instead of putting out the money.

Cool. I've got enough welders cable on my winch that I run it front or rear. That's been really helpfull at times. I used welders connects under the hood. They are quite large (8-9" with both ends connected), made of brass with rubber covers, and you insert on end into the other (polarity guarded) and twist to lock. I've had them on there for about 6 years now and they have worked very well. I like the fact that they are brass, so corrosion is minimal, and that they lock together for safety. Of course I have the male terminal on the battery hooked to the negative side. I'd recommend this style of connector, and it's rated for high amperage (much more than a winch draws).

Re: Score! Got some welding cable.....

Welding cable is awesome but...watch what lugs you get for those. Different stranded cable needs different lugs. I would not buy them at a Home Depot. Go to an electric supply shop and if you know how many strands in it it will help. You can probably have them crimp the ends on there for a fee. Those require a good mechanical or hydraulic crimper with the right dies. You can have the high $$ cable but if you muck up the ends with the wrong lugs you didn't improve much. Expect to pay $2-3 for a lug. Just FYI.
