$825 for a ring/pinion change???

Okay, I'm in Hawaii so I expect a bit of inflation. 4wd and parts wholesalers quoted $721 for ring and pinon, install kit, carrier, and labor. Oh, it takes 2-3 weeks for the parts to come in. Another shop wants $825 for the same thing, but with all new bearings and seals. The Dana 30 has 214,000 miles so I think that's a good idea. They have all the parts and can do the job in 1 day. I'm moving to Florida in 2 months, should I hold out for a cheaper price? What have you guys paid for this?

Re: $825 for a ring/pinion change???

Myself I would wait but that depends on how bad you want the gears. you could probably save 100 or so by waiting till you get to florida. In my experience it is alot cheaper to join a local club and get to know the group. Usually someone in the bunch will know how to do gears. and can do it cheaper or at least comparable to the chain 4wd shops. Here in KC Missouri the vice president of a club quoted me $150 per axle to set up gears. That is in the vehicle by the way. You drive it in, then drive it out.
Hope this helps some Wade

I got 4.56 gears in my tj for a total of 800 front and rear, all new bearings and rear carrier, cause the front one worked. That seems steep per axle!

That sounds about right to the shops around here. A buddy of mine called around pricing that job, and came up with the same numbers. It's a lot of work to do gears, if you knew how many times they had to put it togehter, measure, tear it down, and do it all again just to get them set right, you'd undersatnd. And if it's not done right, you can kiss those gears goodbye....
