My converter won\'t fit either !!!

I have a 85 CJ7, Put in a 77' 360 outa somthing? Had the T176 until I blew it up twice. I purchased a TF727 out of a 81' J10 was told it had a 360 in it. Brought it home rebuilt it, transpac ect. At that time I found out it had a LS lockup converter. Pulled pilot bushing looks very clean. Tried to testfit the converter and the crank has only about an 3/4 ", the converter is about 2" Can anyone help with this. I was told about the th400 bushing, but it's thickness is like a penny. Re: My converter won\'t fit either !!!

the converter nozzle doesnt go into the crank shaft.

some engines do ( I think Fords do) but Amcs Do not.

bolt that converter to the flexplate, then mark a line so you can get them bolted back up right, I know its 4 bolts that LOOK square but they arent, they will only bolt up ONE way. mark it, remove it.

flexplate to engine, converter in tranny ( fill converter with some atf first) smear some on the nozzle where the seal bushing rides)

slide it together!

1. Are you saying you've got a Lock Up converter?
2. Chances are it won't fit...
3. Most 727's were not lock up...
4. I'm confused...

Re: My converter won\'t fit either !!!

ive seen enough in the later years ( my 80 chero had lockup converter) its likely enough.

that has nothing to do with the converter fitting the crank though, in fact you cant visually distinguish a Lockup converter from its exterior.

only tranny input shaft, and INSIDE the converter.

If I remember correctly a lock up converter will fit on a non lockup tranny, but not vice-versa.

Re: My converter won\'t fit either !!!

Well, so far it is a lockup converter, and lockup tf727...
While rebuilding the valve body... kit I ordered the one for a nonlockup... In the instructions it said if it had the tube on the "top" of valve body to order # blabla for lockup tf727.
Also, I know the nipple of the converter does slide in a hole on the center of the crank... As I place the converter on the Flexplate/flywheel ? the nipple rest against the crank and it rocks slightly, causing either the bolts to not sit all the way. I did this once with my Chevy Big block and blew the pump on th400 ; (

Re: My converter won\'t fit either !!!

can you get a picture of teh converter?>

My amc 360 and tf727 didnt go together like that.

edit:
if you stand that trans up on its tailshaft.
so the input shaft is pointing at the sky

a lockup should spin, drop and click intot eh tranny 3 times then its fully seated, when its fully seated it will bolt up and the nozzle will be far enough into the trans to clear the crank.

Re: My converter won\'t fit either !!!

that looks like a AMC/727 converter, those DO NOT fit inside the crank, so the only thing I can think is maybe youve gt th flexplate on backwards ( sticking out too far) OR the converter isnt fully seated in the trans.

you cn use a screw driver and flashlight to roughly line up the pump tangs inside the tranny, to make sure they engage the slots on the converter.

Re: My converter won\'t fit either !!!

I don't have any experience with a 727, but the converter for th400 (w/ QT) won't work with an older 360 crank that originally had a manual tranny without machining a larger recess in the crank.
