Rear 11\" drums - Dana 44 vs. AMC 20
I tore apart my rear Waggy D44 last weekend and the drums are grooved pretty bad. My AMC 20 with 11" drums are in great shape. What are the differences between the Dana and AMC rear drum brakes?

Can I use my AMC drums on the D44? I am converting to 5 lug anyway. I wouldn't have to redrill the drums.

Can I swap the entire backing plate/brake assembly from the AMC to the Dana? If so, I could keep my current e-brake setup.

I thought about doing the rear disk thing, but I don't want to do too much at one time.

Not sure about swapping the entire backing plate but I used my amc 20 drums on the dana 44 brakes. The amc drum isn't as deep so some brake shoe sticks out the back but this seems to wear down by itself.

I don't believe you will be able to switch the backing plates if you are using a CJ 20. The tube diameter on the Waggy 44 is larger from what I have seen, making the hole and bolt pattern on the backing plate different. The drums may work, but as you said the pattern would be different. Other than the plates an drums I think the shoes, cylinders, etc. are the same. Try looking up the shoes etc. for both vehicles on one of the online parts stores and see if they have the same part numbers. You might try the IFJS site for more info.

I can pass along some things I found with my axle swap. I also converted a rear waggy dana 44 to 5 lug. When you get the shafts redrilled, get shouldered studs installed, not screw in studs. Then use 1999 dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 rear 11" drums. They are 5 on 5-1/2 and fit depth perfectly. They are also between $40 and $45 each new.
