I finally drove it!

I finally drove my rebuilt CJ7 for the first time last Friday!

I don't post here very often because my Jeep knowledge is very limited to what I own, but I can honestly say I read this board more than I do anything else on the internet.

I want to extend a hearfelt thanks to those of you who take the time to share your knowledge with guys like me who are looking for answers. I've found more answers to my questions by searching old topics here than I've found anywhere else on the net, and I'm constantly getting new ideas while I read (dangerous for my credit card balance!)

I only wish I had discovered this board earlier in my rebuild planning stages. I would have definitely saved some money (revolver shackles for one) and may have changed a few things.

Since I have no friends who are fellow Jeepers, I'll share a couple of pictures with you. Feel free to visit the page in my sig for more pics and/or info.

I'm not done yet, by any means, but I'm getting closer to my end goal for now and I'll save a Tcase and axles for later.

Congratulations, It looks great.

I will be curious how long that front end holds up with the locker and 35s.

I keep trying to decide if I should put an ARB in my 30 or spend $$$$ on a 44.

It sure is a nice feeling ain't it? Fire up the mill, ease it into gear and finally roll out into the street with the exhaust rumbling, your knees shaking and your heart pounding. Well, at least that's how it was for me the first time I drove mine.

Looks good!

Re: I finally drove it!

Great Job! It looks really nice! But don't the wipers rest on the passenger side?

Re: I finally drove it!

To answer a couple of questions before I head off to work...

Yes, I'm concerned about the ARB in the 30, and I'll be sure to let this board know if I break it. If I'd discovered this board before I made that decision I would probably have done things differently. I knew it was a weak front end but it was a money decision to wait until later to spend the money on another axle. Now I know there are several different front ends out there that I could have scrounged the local parts yards for and it would have barely cost more than what I spent. What is it people say... "Every mistake you live through becomes experience for later?"

I plan to keep the front unlocked unless absolutely necessary, and I've got an automatic to absorb drivetrain shock. Between those to facts and the fact that I've absolutely got to keep this front end from breaking until I pay off some Visa, I think I'll be able to make it last a while. We'll see.

Mike, you're exactly right in your description of what it was like the first time, and yes it was great!

I've barely driven it enough yet to give driving impressions, but I can say that I think I'm really going to like it. The ride is significantly better on the road than it was before I started, and I attribute most of that to the shackle reversal up front, and possibly a little to the new tires.
