Acceptable tolerances 258 cylinder measurement?

What is the acceptable limit in the 258 cylinder diameter before you need to bore it out?

I am asking because I would like to rebuild my spare motor without the expense of new pistons and boring.

The cylinder walls look to be in great shape, but there is a slight ridge at the top of the cylinder which honing and ridge reaming would cure.

Re: Acceptable tolerances 258 cylinder measurement?

you have to measure it in different places and see if its tapered, or out of round as well as checking for oversized.

I was wondering earlier why you wanted to go 0.030 over, might be able to get by with less or none!

the crank might need cleaned up also, so dont order the kit until its check out also!

Re: Acceptable tolerances 258 cylinder measurement?

I know how to measure the cylinder, I was just wondering what the limit is.

And yes I'd like to get by without having to bore the cylinders or buy a new crank. Thats why I come here first, to get an opinion from guys that have already done this.

1. Cylinder: 3.7501" to 3.7533"
2. Taper: 0.005"
3. Out of Round: 0.003"
