MSD 6 install clarification

After re-reading some old posts by TR, Leve and others, I went out to clean up and add some ground wire connections on my 82 CJ7/258/TR TFI/ MSD6T/Weber38. I see when I installed my MSD, I disconnected both oem plugs from the old module. Yet the posts say to disconnect the Two Wire Connector ( white and red wire) at the module. So my question is, did I screw up by unplugging both pig-tails; should I plug the other one back in; or did I just mis-read the instructions and should I leave the old module completely out of the system?

TIA, and have a Happy New Year -
Michael

Re: MSD 6 install clarification

Since you have unplugged both plugs to the ignition module and I assume that you have a running engine, you are using the magnetic pickup within the distributor to trigger the MSD (green and violet wires) this eliminates the need for the stock ignition module.

The other way to run an MSD is to use the ignition module itself to trigger the MSD (white wire) with the MSD used this way you will need to have the module plugged in to the distributor.

Re: MSD 6 install clarification

thanks. After looking at the diagram of the OEM module, I realize that the "other" pigtail connects to the old coil connector and to the distributor. Since these are disconnected for the MSD install, guess it doesn't matter if they're plugged in or not.

You've got it. I left mine in place just incase I lose the MSD I have a backup.
