What is the width of a D44 rear axle out of a Scout II ('74)?

Re: Scout Axle Width

I am at 71" outside of the tire to outside of the tire; that is with a 12.50 tire mounted on an 8" rim; axle came out of a 76 Scout.

Re: Scout Axle Width

Correct me if I wrong but don't you want 1975-80 Scout ll axles? I thought before 75 some had a 2pc. axle.

Re: Scout Axle Width

All the Scout II rear ends were the same Dana 44. No two-piece axles on any of them. There were some versions that had wider drums. My 73 had the heavy duty (wider) drums, my 80 didn't.

Re: Scout Axle Width

No, the difference you're thinking of is that the '74 and prior (some '75 as well) used grease on the rear axle bearings and after that they used the gear oil as a lubricant.

The front axle was a '74 changeover, the drum brake ones were typically (this is not an absolute as there were some crossovers) D30's and the disc braked ones were D44's.
