ignition switch questions

I have a 78 cj-5 w/304 & a painless wiring kit, that currently just cranks, but will not start. It has 5.8 volts to the coil in the run position (I know this is low, but not sure why, but it has run like this since summer.) In the start position it drops to about 1.something. I had the module and coil checked out at autozone and both were good. I was wondering if this could be the ignition switch and if there was a way to test/bypass it to know for sure. as a little more background, the jeep was occasionaly cutting out on me but would refire, then died for good. thought it might've been the accel. pump on the m/c 2100. replaced with my old holley, but still would'nt go. replaced mod & coil with spares I had and was running ok until I went shopping last weekend and it wouldn't start. that's our current predicament, hope someone could give me some feed back. thanx, and Happy Holidays. Alex

Re: ignition switch questions

That is too low.

Get to the back side of the ignition switch.
Key On, Engine Off - look for a full 12 volts getting to the
switch - the (+)terminal or BATT terminal.
If not 12 then look for where that wire comes from, bad connection supplying it.
If OK, measure the "IGN" terminal - should be same. If not,
replace switch.
Make sure the lugs crimped on the wires aren't the voltage
loss.
You have a resistive connection somewhere.

Re: ignition switch questions

OK, finally tredged through the snow to take a look at this. Wasn't exactly sure which wire was which.with key in run (don't have to worry about the engine being off part) measured 11.8 on red wire, and the same on the red w/white tracer. with key out of the ignition measured 12.5 at red wire. does that sound normal? I replaced the switch the same time I was putting the painless kit in so I thought it should be good, but I'm running out of ideas. Any other theories?
