Tire Size Question

Hopefully this is a new twist on an old topic.

Problem #1: Even with a 4" lift my 33 X 12.5 BFGs hit the rear quarter panel at full compression.

Problem #2: I have 4.56 gears (from PO) and 33' tires and this jeep is a daily driver. I cruise down the freeway at 3,000 RPM.

What I'd like to do is find a tire size that is taller, but narrow enough to tuck up under the rear wheel well. I've seen some 34 X 10.4 super swampers. Then recently I saw a jeep on ebay with some 36 X 9.5 tires (They were some sort of aggressive Michelin tire). Anybody know of any tall relatively narrow tires?

Also, can someone explain how to translate a metric tire size (i.e. 235/75-15) into english (30 X 9.50-15)? I thought that the 235 was more or less the tread width, and the 75 was the length from the bead to the tread portion of the tire, but I could be wrong and what I really want to know is how do I figure out the height of the tire?

Finally, just to keep this on topic, I have considered opening up the fender/wheel wells and using TJ flares, and a 1" body lift. I may do either or both of those things some day, but for now I'm just hoping for help with tires size.

Thanks

Shawn

Re: Tire Size Question

I'm running 33 x 9.50s for a very similar reason. I have 2.5" of suspension lift (add-a-leaf and spring rearch on a SUA) but didn't want to go super wide. Most of what I run into, I need more height, not more floatation. BFG used to make a 33x 9.50, Interco makes several tires close to that size. You might even want to look into the size they call Q78. Something like a 36 x 9.50. Good luck, and let us know what you decide!
