Axle Ratio? w/33\'s

Ok, another question for y'all...

33" MT/R's with 4.0L, 5th gear is there, barely.....not worth using. I currently have 3.30....bleh....I want to change gear ratio's and I am having trouble deciding.

I want to go 4.11 or 4.56?

I can forsee going to a larger tire later on but for the next year 33's.

Which would be better, any experiences? Thanks

If it's your Daily driver I wouldn't go much lower than 4:88
If you are going to be wheeling it go as low as you can. You can never be geared low enough. and if you plan on possibly running 35"+ tires in the future you will need all the gear you can get.

Spend once wheel lots!!

Re: Axle Ratio? w/33\'s

I went through the same thing several years ago. What I found, that for a 33" tire the 4.11 work very well giving you the optimum for the 5th gear and almost factory specs with the 33's. But as stated above, if you offroad you will like the 4.56's. That's what I went with and they are perfect for offroad, and will work fine for the 35's if you go that way later.

The down side with 4.56 is the 5th gear suffers a little. If your primary driving is done on the highway I would go with the 4.11 gearing. But if you are about 1/2 and 1/2 on the road and off you can't beat the 4.56 gears. I've been happy with mine for 4 years now and gone through several sets and sizes of tires. Even went with an auto,,, great for wheelin but suffers on the road,,, no overdrive .

Re: Axle Ratio? w/33\'s

go the 4.56
that will be perfect for the 33's and just a tad too high for the 35's. it's a give and take no matter what you choose.

This might help: http://www.intercotire.com/html/table.htm. I'd go with the 4.56's if I were you, but that's my opinion.

Re: Axle Ratio? w/33\'s

I've got the exact same dilema (83 cj7, 4 sky, 33, T4, 258)
what i don't get is if i use the calculator entering 27 original tire size, 33 new size and 2.72 current gear ratio I got a 3.32 result. That seems far from the 4.56 we are talking about. Do I get something wrong ? Is the 2.72 gear set something usual ?
Thanks for your help !

Re: Axle Ratio? w/33\'s

I have the same setup as you. (3:31's) I just bought 4:88's. The following link is a good one to consider your 5th gear. Using 4:88's with 33's at 2700 rpm, you will be going 63. Not bad. Mine however isn't a daily driver.

Re: Axle Ratio? w/33\'s

I like my 4.27/4.30`s. They slowed me down on the highway though, I wish I had a fifth gear.
