AX-15 question

A buddy has this to ask. I don't have a clue about transmissions..
"Do you know much about the AX15's? Mine just started feeling sloppy and not going in gear, or comming out somtimes.. its like the input shaft keeps turning when you push the clutch in and go to downshift.. once in gear 1st thru 4th are pretty good.. but 5th grinds @ around 55 if you get out of the gas. I replaced the gear oil w/ Moble1 Synthetic but that did'nt help.. allthough there was no metal in the fluid, the old fluid looked original. 83,000 miles on it..

If anyone has any ideas please let me know..
Thanks, Ricky...seeya...

Re: AX-15 question

There's good news and bad news.
The good news is you don't have the weaker of the asian transmission.
The bad news is that it's not cheap to repair/replace the transmission.

1. This is just a guess...
2. Syncro's are going out.
3. You may as well:
a. Remove the transmission.
b. Tear down the transmission.
c. Rebuild the transmission, or,
d. Swap the transmission.
4. Or pay someone else a whole lof of money...
5. To do the same job you can do.
6. Costs are about $300 for the rebuild kits.
7. In any case... it ain't gonna be cheap.

Re: AX-15 question

First off ....are you SURE that you should have a GL5 gear oil in an AX15? My 99, although the owners manual specs GL5 (an error), the FSM specs GL3. The phosphorus will corrode your sinchros and cause more of the problems that you are currently seeing.

Mobil sells a GL3 spec synthetic, Mobiltrans (I think), ..but it's only available in 5 gallon buckets @ $110. The MOPAR AX15 gear oil IS SYNTHETIC ...but costs $15 a quart.

If your input shaft is turning while the clutch is fully engaged ....you need to shop for a new pressure plate .... the fingers or diaphram is/are not transmitting the pedal motion fully to the plate.

Since this requires the removal of the t-case and trans it would be an ideal oportunity to inspect the insides of the trans and perhaps refresh the bearings and seals.

Re: AX-15 question

Depends on the year. I just replaced mine tonight (126K), with Mobil-1 again, and the manual specifically states GL-5 only. Ours is a '97.

Re: AX-15 question

Thanks for the help guys.. Looks like the guy he bought the jeep from will be giving him an extended warranty and all he has to do is pay the $100 deductible..
Just when you loose faith in a used car dealer, a nice story does surface once in a while...
Happy Holidays.
