Cancel the \'51, bought a \'48 cj2a!

Well, I took off this morning with a pocket full of dough ready to buy the '51 cj3a. When I got there I got him down to $900, but after further investigating found that the hood was not original, no brakes, no throttle cable, clutch not hooked up, and he couldn't (or wouldn't try) get it started for me. So I walked away.
I went and bought a paper and found one willy's in it under the antique section. A 1948 cj2a. I called him up and found it was pretty much all original, except for the wheels and tires which are 31x10.50's on two black and two chrome wheels. The engine rebuilt 2-3 years ago, has a pto that works, and even has a towbar on it. Only known problem is the brake cylinder is bad, but it still stops with some pumping. I went to check it out and ended up buying it, for about twice the price of the other one though. But well worth it I think. Just had to share the new member of my slowly growing jeep family. Way cool! It sounds like you got a much better deal with the 2A. When someone won't even attempt to start it (was it advertised as running?) it's time to walk away.

I love adds that say the engine runs and then when you get there, the owners wont start it.

I looked at a 31 model A frame that the add said the motor rain. When i got there the guy wouldnt start it and it had been sitting outside for a year with nothing covering the motor. I hate that crap.

Looks like you found yourself a nice "new old" Jeep. Good find, that will be a lot of fun to drive around in.

Re: Cancel the \'51, bought a \'48 cj2a!

Well, I guess the guy never actually said it ran, more like insinuated. It's sitting on a lot with a bunch of other cars, so I just stopped to find out what the story on it was and asked if it ran. He said it needed a starter. I just assumed that meant it ran, and with a push could be pop started. When I went back to get it, he told me he never actually got it started, and the starter was smoking last time he tried. He said he didn't know if it was 6v or 12v, so I'm guessing he put 12v to it and smoked it. And once I got to really poking around on it, it just got worse and worse, and I started seeing $$$$ signs flying. I'm glad I walked away from it, cause now I've got a good runnin '48 that starts right up.
