Got a (almost)free Jeep!!!

My buddy just moved up to AK, and sold me his 80 CJ7 w/304, SOA, and 35's(stock axles) for $50!! And, it runs pretty good!.....Since i had to sell my jeep for school,I am going to build this up and have a little over a grand to throw around. Should I add TBI to the 304, save some $$ to multi-port EFI the 304, or save for a 4.0 HO swap?? I am a little concerned going with the 4.0 because of lack of power, especially since 38's are soon to come and dont want to swap gears because this is going to be a daily driver and an axle swap is soon to come.

I would make sure everything is in good working order. Then get the stock rear axle welded, add a winch, and wheel it till it dies.

If the motor runs... run it until it BLOWS UP. I would replace everything from the motor mounts/tranny mounts/ brakes etc... get it in good order to drive on the road then worry about the other junk. The 4.0 will put out plenty enough power for 38s with a few small mods...

Re: Got a (almost)free Jeep!!!

Considering the 4.0 and the 304 have similar power ratings you will be able to use either for 38s but either will require you to regear your axles.. and if your swapping in new ones you most likely have to swap gears/rebuild them anyway..

I say run the 304 until it dies, and like others suggestd make sure everything works, and fix small stuff first with your money..

You don't want to spend $1,000 (all your money) on modifications and then something goes out and you don't have the money to fix it... that would suck..

Since you got it for $50, why not fix it up so it runs great, and work on mods down the road.. that would be my plan atleast..

Great find!!

HAVE FUN!
