OT - Help Identifying rear end on 78 GMC truck

I just got a 78 GMC Sierra truck from a guy for my Jeep swap. I can't figure out what the rear end is. The differential case has 10 bolt holes, but it's not round like a 10 bolt. I thought it was a dana 44 until I found out Chevy never put a 44 in the rear. I think the truck has a 44 up front though. It has a 350 engine with sm465 tranny and np208 tcase if that helps any. Any help is appreciated.

Oh, and if anybody is interested in the np208, let me know because I won't be using it.

Thanks, Andy

Re: OT - Help Identifying rear end on 78 GMC truck

From what I understand, GM used 4 different rear ends (10,12,14 semi,14 full) and three front ends (10, D44, D60) in those years. So, unless your truck has had an axle swap it's a 10 bolt. Also, a NP-208 t-case was rare (if indeed original) to anything but the '82-'87 model years. If the case is aluminum, it's a 208 or a 241. The 241s were found in '88 and up trucks, so it's a 208 unless it's been swapped out.

If you could take some pics of the rear end we could confirm it. In the mean time, this is a 44:

and this is a 10 bolt:

Ah - the images don't work. Copy and paste their address into your browser and you should be able to see them.

Re: OT - Help Identifying rear end on 78 GMC truck

I don't think it's a 10 bolt because the differential isn't round. The tag on the tcase says it is a np208 c. Could the rear end be a swapped in dana 60? It is 6 lug so I don't know. Whoever had this truck before had done some different stuff to it. I think it used to be a longbed and it looks like they cut the frame down to make it a shortbed. Oh, and it has 4.11 gears if that helps any. Thanks, Andy

Is it full float or semi float? Full float has a hub. Semi float does not.

Maybe this will help. Drawings of a whole bunch of differentials.
