Which Jeep should I buy?

I'm a college student looking into buying a Jeep and was considering my options. I plan on the Jeep being a daily driver so on-road performance characteristics is important, especially gas mileage. I plan on using the Jeep on some light trails for recreation and was wondering if I should go for a later model CJ-7 or a newer YJ. I know the ride is better on the Wranglers but I like the Tcase and the axles on the CJ better. What are you alls suggestions?

Re: Which Jeep should I buy?

Hmmm.. if you are looking for somehting to get you around everyday, and you want good gas milage then my knee jerk reaction would be to say get a YJ with the 2.5L motor in it. You should be able to find one pretty cheap, and if taken care of those engines are great. And in stock form they get pretty good milage (for a Jeep) However don't expect to break any land speed records. Now if you have future plans to upgrade... then I might hold out for the 4.0L. If if it is a daily driver and sees mostly on road the 2.5 will be ok.

5. IF you're still in college... you can't afford a Jeep!
6. It's as simple as that.
7. But if you must...I'd go with an 79 or an 86 CJ with a Dana44 Rear end....

I'd say hold out for a '91 or newer YJ with the 4.0. Sure you could get one with a 2.5, but you're only going to see 3mpg difference.

I'm gonna go with Jam on this one. The 4.0L is a bulletproof engine, It'll run with no oil, upside-down in a river if you really try . The 90 and up is a must if it's a manual and it's a YJ, just to save you the trouble of a tranny swap later on.

Re: Which Jeep should I buy?

Well guys I'm going to totally disagree with everyone, I say get a 4 cyl. 97 TJ! YES a TJ the 97's are getting very cheap now and you can not beat the ride vs any other SWB Jeep. Just get some cheap 15x8's with some 31's and go at it for awhile. I'd rather have a newer TJ for a grand more with a 4 banger then an older Yj with the 4.0, the ride is worth the loss of power all by it's self, you should be able to pick one up for around $6500 and that's not bad. I paid $5500 for my 85 Cj-7 in 98, but I did get ripped
